I live in an area where lots of famous people live "to get away from it." I have been to parties with Robin Williams, stood in line at the grocery next to Mare Winningham, served dinner to Bobby McFerrin, taught John Lasseter's step-son (Toy Story genius), and served JL at a school fundraiser. A good friend of mine is the nanny for an A-list actress that everyone here has heard of and drooled over. The Smothers Brothers and the Doobie brothers were clients of my father's. Every once in awhile I see Joe Montana at the movies, or out and about. Parts of American Grafitti were filmed on my street, one block up, and Tucker was filmed at the end of another street I lived on (there are McMansions there now, though. Those guys were wandering all over town. I ran into the Bridges a few times. They like it around here because they get treated fairly normally by the locals. They aren't here to hide, they are here to live normal lives, and for some reason, the culture of the wine country is conducive to that. For only a few of you, this will mean something, but one year in jazz band, we had Ed Shaugnessy come play with us. Another year, Maynard Fergussen came to play with a neighboring high school jazz band. My world civ teacher's brother is Tommy Newsom. Not bad for a girl who has never lived anywhere but dinky, agricultural Sonoma County. Shoshana

by RAYZORBLADE inhave any of you on this forum, ever met up with anyone considered famous?
i've met a great deal of people over the years.

Did you have lots of people hit on you at assemblies ???
by run dont walk infrannie has an entertaining thread going ... .

Even at 17 and 18, my mother would not let me roam the corridors at the assemblies alone. My mom was a sicko. She kept score of the guys who hit one me. And yes, it happened. I got two points if it was a guy with a ring. 3 points if he was carrying a baby....Creeped me out. I still need to confront my mom about this. I was always really hurt when she did this, and I never told her that. Shoshana

legal question
by og inso, after trying to make a religiously split household work for more than three years, i'm divorcing my wife.
and, she has apparently decided that since i'm obviously demonized and since her preaching work is god's will, anything goes in the settlement, including going after money my parents put into our home, which she knows was intended as a protection of their income.. and... since she pioneered for our entire marriage, and never worked 'secularly' she is going for indefinite maintenance (alimony).
so, here's my question: does anyone have an opinion about whether or not it's a good idea to try and establish that she spent far more time doing ministry than she spent on domestic support and child care?

That issue is for later on. ANd yes, it is probably a good one if you are going for limiting the support she receives. BUT the first thing you absolutely must do is get a list of the 7 "best" cut throat attorneys in your area and pay for a consultation with each of them. This knocks them out of the running to represent her on conflict of interest. You deserve a leg up. Go out and get it. It will be a grand well spent to know her lawyer isn't as good as yours. HURRY. As a YOUNG loyal JW, did you think you would see you're 60th birthday ?
by run dont walk inwith all the talk in the organization about the end being so close, and we have all heard this story over and over again for years, as a young/loyal jw, did you think you would see your 60th birthday.. if we were to walk into the kingdom hall today and poll all the jw's under 30, and ask them "will you see your 60th birthday", what kind of response would you get ???.
armageddon is not coming, the year 2014 will pass, as will 2025, 2075, 2100, and even 3000. .
would love to hear experiences from some of the older ones on this board, who probaly thought the same thing when they were young.

That was my problem. I couldn't see it as just around the next bend. I knew I needed an education, and not some trade, to be able to support myself. I got so much initial flak and rejection from the congregation during my first year at the university, that I started my second one out of the organization. I got more love, affection and acceptance from classmates that barely knew me than those who had known me since I was a babe. Fast forward 15 years. I'm still here, and I still need to support myself. I have a nice job, with a nice salary, and enough to enjoy myself, or go to law school... one of the two...I wouldn't have a nice home and financial security if I wasn't willing to admit to myself that armegeddon wasn't just around the next bend. Thank goodness I checked a road map before I bought that load of crap. And those out in service now are gleefully announcing the change in the generation doctrine, as though that makes it all better now, and see, it's okay to plan for the future now. Well, if I had waited for that, I'd be destitute right now (or married to an idgit I couldn't stand). Shoshana

Do you miss the Kingdom Melodies?
by Candlestick02 injust curious.
i went to the 3rd church that i've ever stepped foot into after leaving the borg 3 years ago.
so, as i'm standing there (in the front row, i might add) for the musical worship portion of the service.. i felt like a big idiot.

The music never moved me, and I was disappointed when they moved to tapes from someone playing the piano. But, once I left, the VERY first thing I did was join the university chorus. I couldn't wait to sing. To sing hymns, spirituals and masses with others who knew what they were doing, with a real live conductor shaping our performance was a more spiritual experience for me than any song that I ever sang at the Kingdom Hall. It was chorus that put meaning into singing prayers for me. Yet another clue that JWs weren't it for me. Shoshana

There is an easy solution for the parent, but not the bystander. If a father has his girls and he needs to use a restroom, the staff at a store, restaurant, etc. can reasonably be trusted to sit with the children for 3 or 5 minutes. This is not too much to expect from the staff. If they refuse, just ask to speak with a manager, this should take care of it. Nothing is going to happen with a staff member patiently waiting outside a restroom in front of everyone for a few minutes. I used to baby sit a 5 year old boy. And when we went off on our daily summer adventures, this used to happen. If I had to go, I would ask an employee of the establishment to watch for 2 minutes, and it was never a problem. If he had to go, I would ask one of the male staff members to accompany him to the john, while I hovered outside for the two or three minutes. People have to pee. People need privacy. Bystanders should not have to feel uncomfortable. Nothing is going to happen in the time needed to take a leak. And you are right there if it starts to take too long. We all must rely on the kindness of strangers from time to time...some are more trustworthy than others, employees with name tags and a pending paycheck are not going to take off with the kid. Shoshana the yenta here. Joanna, if you send me your e-mail address in a pm, I would like to describe to you a really cool apostate-esque guy I know of that might be your cup of tea, and I think you may be his. If we can e-mail off this board, I could send you on the "path" to hook up....I seem to be able to get pms but not always send them, so if you give me an addy, I will definitely get back to you. Hang in there....Shoshana
